Lost or Stolen Items

Please be aware that the City of Spanish Fork, including the cemetery staff, is not responsible for lost or stolen items. With that said, as we go about our daily routine, we do our best to watch for suspicious behavior in the cemetery and confront individuals when warranted. We do not patrol the grounds for the express purpose of apprehending thieves. Please do not place anything of extreme value at gravesites.

All cemetery decorations are discarded by cemetery staff when they are determined to be old, unsightly or create maintenance problems. Unless the decorations are confined to the headstone and surrounding concrete border, they will be removed as scheduled by cemetery staff.

Commemorative Decorations Explanations

Mother's Day

  • We ask visitors to begin decorating for Mother's Day no earlier than the Wednesday before Mother's Day.
  • When Mother's Day and Memorial day are three weeks apart, we typically allow the decorations to stay through the Sunday following Mother's Day.
  • Unless the decorations are confined to the headstone and surrounding concrete mow strip, they will be removed as scheduled.
  • All decorations displayed on the grass or that spill out onto the grass will be discarded by the cemetery staff as scheduled above.
  • This allows the cemetery staff to continue with the routine landscape maintenance responsibilities.

Memorial Day

  • We ask visitors to begin decorating for Memorial Day no earlier than the Wednesday before Memorial Day.
  • We allow the decorations to stay through the Sunday following Memorial Day.
  • Unless the decorations are confined to the headstone and surrounding concrete mow strip, they will be removed as scheduled.
  • All decorations displayed on the grass or that spill out onto the grass will be discarded by the cemetery staff on the Monday, one week following Memorial Day.
  • This allows the cemetery staff to continue with the routine landscape maintenance responsibilities.

Permanent Decorations

Permanent decorations are those intended to remain at the grave site for periods in excess of 30 days. These items usually include shepherd hooks (vertical structures), solar lighting, artificial flowers, flags and memorabilia.

In order to provide a high standard of care with a limited staff it is necessary to implement guidelines governing all permanent decorations. All shepherd hooks, works of art and solar lights must be approved by the sexton before installation. If not approved they cannot be installed! If installed, the decoration must be placed on the headstone, marker or monument or on the concrete mowing strip. These items must be secured to the grave marker or base by means of holes drilled in the concrete or by other secure attachment. These items cannot project beyond the headstone base in any horizontal direction nor can the items exceed six feet in height from the ground elevation. No permanent decoration may be placed on the grass outside of the headstone or concrete mowing strip.
